Community & Environment

CCBS Science Outreach is an organization run by graduate students and postdocs dedicated to humanizing science and scientists and building public awareness of the benefits CCBS and science in general have for our communities.  We are focused on local, grassroot efforts which are easily scalable to larger areas.  We are grateful for the generous support received from CCBS, The Beckman Laser Institute, The American Society for Cell Biology and 7 Generation Games.

We currently are engaged in the following projects:

  • Sending groups of 2 or 3 scientists from different disciplines to local coffee houses and pubs with a sign that says: "We are scientists! Ask us anything!" The last event in the community was on September 28th, 2017 at the Irvine Unified School District.
  • Volunteering at local events, such as beach cleanups. We participated in the Huntington Beach clean-up day on July 9th, 2017 and the Back Bay Coastal clean-up day on September 16th, 2017.

  • “Humans of New York - style” articles about CCBS scientists to be distributed on social media.
  • A science essay contest based on identifying and proposing a solution for an open problem in cell biology for students at Irvine Unified School District.
  • Coaching MathCounts and Math Olympiad teams at local elementary and middle schools.

Upcoming events include the "21st Century Careers Conference"  being held on December 14th, 2017 at the Beckman Center, sponsored by the Irvine Unified School District.

Each project is run autonomously by one to two leaders. For additional information, please contact Sean Horan,  or Matt Bovyn,, Program Administrators.
